Once the Central Jurisdiction was created, Black Methodists endeavored to make it an effective organization. It became almost a church within a church. Its episcopal leaders were outstanding and effective and highly revered. Both clergy and lay leadership developed and provided leadership for the whole denomination. Lifelong friendships were formed across annual conference lines. The Central Jurisdiction became both beloved and a source of contention and embarrassment. It was still a racially segregated structure!
